The large fish & chips - two juicy, well-seasoned pieces of cod - is made even better if you upgrade to garlic or one of the other chip options. The housemade baja sauce adds a nice zesty kick. Playland at the Beach
(1928-1972)
Though a roller coaster first appeared on San Francisco's Ocean Beach in 1884, it was George Whitney who helped consolidate the assorted attractions. He and his brother had helped pioneer a fast photo-finishing process that complemented the amusement park. At its peak, there were 14 rides and 25 concessions. He also purchased the land, along with the Cliff House and Sutro Baths, shortly before his death in 1958. The Playland closed in 1972 to be used for new condo developments. An art installation in 1996 commemorated Playland on site.

Charity
Charity: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Later this year, reader Justin D. is participating in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk up in Portland, Ore. He'll be fundraising for the third consecutive year in memory of his cousin. Similar walks will be held in San Francisco, Oakland, Cupertino, Santa Monica, and Irvine.

Charity: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Later this year, reader Justin D. is participating in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk up in Portland, Ore. 1. Folsom Street Faire
Sunday, 11am-6:30pm
About 400,000 attendees help make this San Francisco's second largest event (only behind June's Pride event). Fetishes, BD/SM, leather, and kink mix with over 200 booths and indie rock stages - with a lead performance by Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair.
2. Oakland Eat Real Fest
Friday 1-9pm, Saturday 10:30am-9pm, Sunday 10:30am-5pm
Oakland's Jack London Square will host over 50 food vendors, 20 local breweries, and dozens of presentations and contests.
3. Alice Now & Zen
Sunday, 11am doors, noon-5pm
Golden Gate Park's Sharon Meadow hosts the annual concert with 97.3 FM. This year, headliners will be OneRepublic, with Goo Goo Dolls, Plain White T's, Walk Off the Earth, and Larkin Poe opening. I'd recommend sitting outside the main area near a fence. . . easier to use restrooms and no restrictions on your picnic items.
