Yesterday, on a rare warm winter day, I hopped on my bike and pedaled into the Dogpatch. Here, I found a treasure trove of deliciousness in the form of ice cream. No lines. Metal spoons for tastings. Nifty shared tables and mini stools. This shop sits in the midst of a renaissance along the Third St. corridor, with Rickshaw Bags, Yield Wine Bar, and Serpentine Restaurant within a block or two. I ordered the bourbon & caramel, but other flavors that piqued interest included the ginger cookie and mung bean. The small at $3.50 was more than enough for my palate! 4-1/2 stars - 503 reviews

Much like Sol Food in San Rafael, multiple locations in a narrow radius can (and does) work. Lines can range upwards of one hour on busy weekends. I visited Ramen Parlor on a day-trip bike ride, and it was heaven. I opted for regular style miso flavor with extra noodles. You're able to add ingredients such as bamboo shoots or extra chashu pork. I will be back. 4 stars - 1159 reviews (Dojo); 3-1/2 stars - 156 reviews (Parlor).

Local History
Milpitas: Waves of European immigrants moved into the area during the 1850s and 1870s, and soon thereafter Smith's Corners set up as a saloon for weary travelers between San Jose and Oakland. An annexation battle with San Jose ensued during the 1950s, including the creation of the Milpitas Minutemen. Milpitas incorporated as a city, voted down San Jose's annexation attempt, and integrated Daniel French's Minuteman statue in Concord, Mass. as part of the city seal. Current population is about 67,000, with over 62% of Asian descent.
