Local Food Pick
Ramen Dojo
805 S B St.
San Mateo, CA 94401
or
Ramen Parlor

San Mateo, CA 94401

Much like Sol Food in San Rafael, multiple locations in a narrow radius can (and does) work. Lines can range upwards of one hour on busy weekends. I visited Ramen Parlor on a day-trip bike ride, and it was heaven. I opted for regular style miso flavor with extra noodles. You're able to add ingredients such as bamboo shoots or extra chashu pork. I will be back. 4 stars - 1159 reviews (Dojo); 3-1/2 stars - 156 reviews (Parlor).

Local History
Cyril Magnin (1899-1988): His influence in politics dates back to FDR's re-election campaign in 1944, when he served as Treasurer for the Northern California region. He also contributed heavily to the JFK, LBJ, and RFK campaigns. He rose in local prominence during the 1950s, as one of a quartet called "The Green Machine." Magnin later was appointed San Francisco's first Chief of Protocol, and helped establish the Asian Art Museum and American Conservatory Theater. Cyril Magnin St. runs from Market St. to O'Farrell St. in the Union Square district.

Local Charity
Organization: KQED (88.5 FM). Founded in 1969, this NPR-member radio station ranks nationwide as number one for listeners and number one for Bay Area radio stations as of last summer. Radio personalities such as Michael Krasny, Terry Gross, and Neal Conan deliver sharp commentaries and intellectual debates on topical issues. The latest listener-based donor drive is underway. Bay Area Top 3 Free Activities of the Week
1. Speakeasy SF Beer Week Bash [Friday noon-9pm]: It's a bit of a trek, but this San Francisco brewery knows how to throw an excellent party. You'll be able to meet the brewers, down $3 fresh beers on tap, and listen to live music from Whisky Pills Fiasco and Robin Ross & Andrew. 1195 Evans Ave. (at Jennings St.), Bayview district. www.goodbeer.com

2. Warren Hellman Memorial [Sunday 11am-6pm]: Honor the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass benefactor in style. Old Crow Medicine Show, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, and Boz Skaggs will be among the big names to pay tribute. Doors open at 8am, and I'm guessing capacity will be reached quickly. Two stages in the Ocean Beach Parking Lot, plus live streaming at www.strictlybluegrass.com.

3. AIDS Memorial Quilt Display [through Monday]: It's the largest display of the AIDS Quilt in San Francisco since 1999. Over 91,000 names cover more than 47,000 panels for the 54-ton tapestry. Five Castro locations (Under One Roof, Bank of America, Body, Catch, and the former Tower Records) will house the 312 panels through Monday. www.aidsquilt.org
