Randy's Guide CCLXXVI (276)

Local Food Pick
Stumptown Brewery
15045 River Rd.
Guerneville, CA 95446

The huge back patio, which overlooks the river, is perfect for a sunny day in Sonoma County. Three beers are made on site, along with a few choice microbrews. As it turns out, the founder of Zeitgeist started Stumptown back in 1997. Bar food in the form of Asiago fries and pulled-pork sandwiches complement the beer nicely. 4 stars - 68 reviews

Local History
Dr. John Townsend ( -1850): He arrived in California by traversing the Sierra Nevadas along the Truckee River, surviving a route that the Donner Party would not. He served as the first licensed doctor in California, as San Francisco's fourth mayor in 1848, and as a front-line specialist battling the cholera epidemic. He succumbed to the disease in 1850. Townsend St. runs from the Embarcadero waterfront, along the CalTrain track system, and ends in the Showplace Square near the Concourse Exhibition Center in SF.

Bay Area Top 3 Free Activities of the Week

2. Giants FanFest, from 10am-3pm on Saturday, will be a great opportunity to meet big-name players such as Tim Lincecum, Buster Posey, and Pablo Sandoval. Plus, tickets go on sale starting at 8am for the 2012 season. www.sfgiants.com

3. While free BBQ at assorted bars across the Bay Area is a major selling point for Super Bowl Sunday, this might be the best chance to check out typically crowded museums like the California Academy of Sciences or the Asian Art Museum for free admission.
