Randy's Guide 3-8-5

Music
We're finally drunk enough that we're finally soaking up
The hours that everyone else throws away
And if we have to go now
I guess there's always hope
Tomorrow night will be more of the same

The current trio met at the Claremont Colleges, moved to Berkeley, then shifted to Brooklyn in 2001 to record their first album. Just last month, the group released its fifth album and will be stopping by The Independent on May 7.

Current Event
The renter-landlord battle has spilled over into the short-term rental space, currently dominated by Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway. The latest salvo involves City Attorney Dennis Herrera and his two lawsuits against property owners in North Beach and Pacific Heights.

"I think this will send a message to landlords that these are illegal, andif you are doing it you'll have to pay stiff fines."
-- Ted Gullicksen, San Francisco Tenants Union executive director

"If a small number of predatory landlords are abusing platforms like ours to illegally evict tenants in search of a quick buck, we wholeheartedly support efforts to bring those landlords to justice and applaud the city attorney for his action."
 -- Airbnb statement

"I think they have the wrong information. I've got a tenant in there right now, a long-term tenant who's paying me rent."
-- Darren Lee, Pacific Heights property owner facing Herrera lawsuit

Nooks & Crannies
Watts Towers
1765 E 107th St
Los Angeles, CA 90002

The towers, constructed by Simon Rodia over 33 years, consist of 17 structures made from steel pipes, wire mesh, porcelain, tile, glass, and found objects ranging from bed frames to sea shells. Most of the material originated from the Malibu Pottery and the California Clay Products Company. During WWII and the years after, Rodia faced vandalism and abuse from the local community. Actor Nicholas King led a consortium to save the towers from being razed by the City of Los Angeles. This towers passed an engineering test in 1959, and eventually control of the site was handed over to the City of Los Angeles in 1975, then the State of California in 1978. It's now on the National Register of Historic Places, along with being designated a State Historic Park, National Historic Landmark, California Historical Landmark, and LA Historic Cultural Monument. The City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and LACMA are the current operators.

Music
All the boys who called their mothers on that day
Were no tough bunch, but they had the nerves to go and say
That all your secrets were drowned
With the pioneers who were flooded from this town
They packed their bags only moments too late
With the pounding waves crashing up against the weakened water gates
-- "Tessellate," by Tokyo Police Club (1.2 million views, Apr '08 upload)

If the singers look young in the video, it's because they are. Most of them wouldn't have been able to buy liquor legally in a bar in the U.S. Good thing they're Canadian, eh? By the time they were all at least 22 years old, they'd already played Coachella, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Bonnaroo. Catch them at the Independent on April 28.

Current Event
East Oakland has a new shopping center: Foothill Square. In it, there's a supermarket, a Ross Dress for Less, and a Wells Fargo, the area's first full-service bank in 45 years.

"Obviously, there are entities and investment groups that are looking at Oakland differently now, and a lot of that has to do with the new people that are moving to the city to live here and work here."
-- Fred Blackwell, Oakland's city administrator

"People can come over here and get everything they need. They don't have to go from store to store."
-- Maggie Parker, 40-year resident of East Oakland

"There's a market right here. We have 310,000 people within a 10-minute drive; 90,000 people live within 2 miles. When you have this kind of population density and you don't have competition, it makes it attractive to a lot of people."

Music
Remember the moment you know exactly where you're going
'Cause the next moment, before you know it
Time is slowing, and it's frozen still
And the windowsill looks real nice, right?
You think twice about your life
It probably happens at night, right?
Fight it, take the pain, ignite it

Some have deemed this style of music "schizophrenic pop." It's definitely a unique sound. The Ohio duo signed a contract with Atlantic Records and released their first studio album in 2012. Previously, they've toured with Neon Trees and Fall Out Boy. Now, you can catch them on TV at the MTV Music Awards this weekend, followed by a show at Oakland's Fox on May 10.

Current Event
Because the San Francisco Unified School District is part of a state agency, 883 workers currently make below San Francisco's minimum wage of $10.74.

"When I first heard that we didn't pay some of our employees the San Francisco minimum wage, my first thought was there has to be a mistake or a misunderstanding."

Yelp

I can mainly attest to this gastropub's super-convenient location, modern but cozy ambience, and a delicious wild boar sloppy joe. Other hits include foie gras poutine, beer-battered fish & chips, and the Painted Hills beef burger. I thought Washington didn't like Oregon? Great $3 right-sized desserts too! The night wouldn't be complete without trying one of their bourbon cocktails or local beers on tap. No reservations. 4 stars - 908 reviews

A short stroll from Quinn's can bring you to either the distillery or a lounge set up by Sun Liquor. They make a couple of gins (one of which is 100 proof), a couple of rums, a vodka, and orange bitters. I brought a reasonably priced bottle of the "weaker" gin back home. Happy hour runs until 7pm at both locations. The distillery also serves food - imagine that! 4 stars - 106 reviews (Pike); 4-1/2 stars - 278 reviews (Summit).

Nooks & Crannies
Cal Park Hill Tunnel

This tunnel, originally constructed in 1884 and sealed in 1978, reopened in 2010 as a pedestrian and bicycle pathway between San Rafael and Larkspur. Cycling to the ferry via the short tunnel can take a remarkably quick five minutes - faster than an auto. The tunnel offers cell phone access and wheelchair accessibility.

Efforts to convert sidewalk into permeable drought-resistant plant gardens have been widespread, from the Bayview and Potrero Hill, to the Outer Sunset and the Tenderloin.
