No less than two tour groups of about a dozen individuals each paraded through the beach during one recent two-hour visit. The mile-long beach offers greater protection from westerly winds and affords awe-inspiring views of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge. Be prepared for crowded parking lots on weekends!

Diego Rivera Mural Project

The City College obtained this Diego Rivera mural after the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition closed. After plans started and stopped in fits and starts, it was finally moved into the lobby of the campus theatre in 1961. Visiting hours with no admission charge are limited - for summer, they are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-5pm.

In a sea of seen-to-be-seen cocktail lounges and gastropubs, this quiet, unassuming, well-maintained dive in the Outer Mission is just the place to kick back with some friends or get some advice from seasoned locals. Much like other venues in the southern third of the City, this one isn't on the social radar yet, and may never be.

Diego Rivera Mural Project

The City College obtained this Diego Rivera mural after the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition closed. After plans started and stopped in fits and starts, it was finally moved into the lobby of the campus theatre in 1961. Visiting hours with no admission charge are limited - for summer, they are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-5pm.

Celebrate the Obon festival at San Francisco's Buddhist Church, with bon dancing, taiko drums, and bingo.
3. Berkeley Kite Festival

The West Coast Kite Championship will be the highlight, but you'll also find kite making activities, taiko drummers, and a kite battle. It's at the Berkeley Marina, where you'll have to pay for parking if you drive.
