Randy's Guide 3-9-0

Music
And our love of freedom holds a veil over our eyes
Rights that are given can be taken away
Just a few honest words
It shouldn't be that hard
-- "A Few Honest Words," by Ben Sollee (43 thousand views, Nov '12 upload)

NPR is rather smitten with the 30-year-old cellist from Kentucky, as it praised him as one of the top ten unknown artists of 2007 and aired a feature about him on All Things Considered in 2008. For a 2009 performance at Bonnaroo, he biked over 300 miles to the venue with his supplies and cello. On a 2010 album, he sang with two other Kentucky artists on themes ranging from mountaintop removal coal mining to poverty. Catch this artist at BottleRock Napa on Friday, along with The Cure and TV on the Radio.

Current Event
San Francisco's State Senator Mark Leno failed, by a vote of 19-18, to pass his bill that aimed to curb Ellis Act evictions.

"We're talking about hard-working people trying to make their way in a very expensive city. And for no cause, no reason, they are being evicted."
 -- Mark Leno, D-San Francisco

"Asking private owners to foot the bill for something that (San Francisco leaders) have neglected is inappropriate."
 -- Norma Torres, D-Pomona

"Senator Leno's bill gives our City the critical tools we need to close a loophole in the Ellis Act and stop these evictions."
-- Ed Lee, San Francisco Mayor

We stumbled upon this place while strolling downtown Grass Valley. The winemaker's wife is very personable and informative about not just the winery but the Nevada City - Grass Valley area. The winery itself is located about six miles away. You're treated to several complementary tastes of their wine, with some unusual varietals such as fiulano, rkatsiteli, and teroldego. I would recommend a quick stop here in this historic building, c. 1846. 3-1/2 stars - 2 reviews (Grass Valley); 4-1/2 stars - 2 reviews (Nevada City)

I'd suggest taking the upper, longer trail to the Falls, then return on the lower, shorter trail back to your car. We made it in a little over three hours at a fairly rapid pace.

I do believe I was inspired by Nerd Nite East Bay!

1. Late Nite Science Show: Thursday, 7-10pm
Three Bay Area scientists discuss on Carry the One Radio podcast the latest in spider communication, auditory feedback, and sound processing. Then, stay for a reception through related exhibits while enjoying refreshments.

2. California Academy of Sciences: Sunday, 11am-5pm
Arrive early, as there will be a line for one of four free days this year at what's arguably San Francisco's best museum. From the Earthquake Exhibit to the Planetarium IMAX films, you will easily spend several hours here even on a repeat visit.

3. National Day of Civic Hacking: Saturday-Sunday, 9am-6pm
Instead of complaining about MUNI or the homeless, Code for San Francisco and San Francisco State University present techies with the opportunity to actually do something about civic problems. Bring your laptop to one of two locations (SoMa and SFSU), and be prepared to work as a team.

Since their first demo CD back in 2002, the eclectic rock band in Brooklyn has found a way to collaborate with top performers. They range from Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor to David Bowie. Current Event
As part of a new police strategy called CeaseFire, Oakland crime seems to be on the decline. Shootings have dropped 35% versus last year, while robberies have decreased 38%.

"Police strategy plays a role, and I think the community outreach and activism play a role."
-- Sean Whent, Oakland's police chief

"It is clear from the statistics that the trends over time have turned encouraging .... There is still an important distinction between celebration of good news and announcing conclusions about cause and effect."
-- Frank Zimring, UC Berkeley School of Law professor

"The police did not listen to our concerns. But right now, everybody is important. When we have a graffiti cleanup, (the police) will show up, and... it makes the fear factor go away."
-- Thu Pham, 21-year Oakland resident

The indie rock quintet from Oxford, England has quietly racked up awards in their homeland. They're still waiting for some American love, though with a dynamic lead spouting off anti-Spotify, pro-vinyl sentiment and vigorously jumping off stages, perhaps their time will come soon. Third album in, local show is at Oakland's Fox Theater on Tuesday. Cage the Elephant supports.

The Golden State Warriors selected first-time coach Steve Kerr to lead the team, eight days after the firing of Mark Jackson.

"We're taking a little bit of a risk on his coaching ability, but we did that with Mark, and it worked."
-- Joe Lacob, Warriors majority owner

"(Jackson) deserves to be our coach next year.... I want Coach Jackson to be the guy leading us."
-- Stephen Curry, Warriors point guard

"The location is ideal. My daughter goes to Cal and plays volleyball. My oldest son is in college in San Diego, and our youngest is a junior in high school. It's just a short flight for them."
 -- Steve Kerr, Warriors coach

Music
Come and dance with me, pretty sweet fool
I wanna be your toy, I wanna be your toy
-- "Dance with Me," by Ra Ra Riot (149,000 views; Feb '13 upload)

The band started off playing at basement parties around the Syracuse University campus. They found some success by opening for The Editors and Tokyo Police Club, then debuted at South by Southwest in 2007. The original drummer was then found presumably drowned later that year in Buzzard's Bay after a show in Rhode Island. For the third album, released last year, the group shifted its style away from the baroque-heavy chords and more toward electropop. Catch them as part of Golden Gate Park's OysterFest, along with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Poolside, and Crash.

President Barack Obama plans to wrap up his latest California fundraising tour tomorrow with an event focusing on energy efficiency at Mountain View's Walmart store.

"Our buildings represent the largest piece of our carbon footprint that we directly control. From lighting and water conservation to refrigeration systems and building materials, we view our facilities as laboratories of sustainability."
 -- Walmart website

"I don't mind standing up for workers and letting Walmart know they need to pay a decent wage and let folks organize."
-- President Barack Obama, at a 2007 meeting with union activists

"It's a bit of a head scratcher. It doesn't fit inside the box when you talk about income equality all week, and then do an event at Walmart."
