Local News
Pinterest, a community website for artists, has penned a deal to take over the San Francisco Design Center. One obstacle: the buliding is already 90% leased by showroom industry companies.

"The market is changing, and the landlords are seeing dollar signs. That kind of displacement sickens me."
 -- Malia Cohen, San Francisco Supervisor

"With the age of the Internet and immediacy of goods, the industry has ventured away from the showroom industry."
 -- Sean Murphy, Bay West Development partner

"There are upholsterers, refinishers, manufacturers... throughout the City. If you shrink us down, you shrink those jobs."
 -- Jim Gallagher, Garden Court Antiques general manager

"I want to keep up with the times because if we don't we are going to wither and die. I love the idea of getting an endorsement of a tech company like Pinterest."
 -- Joe Gaul, GaulSearson Furniture partner

Fear not the Bayview. From the moment you step in, you realize you're in for a treat. The decor and ambiance reflects the 1940s, with dim lights and live piano music. Food is super delicious - I think the peanut butter stew is one of the best dishes I've had in recent memory. Plus, you have the cause behind it, namely that it helps disadvantaged youths aged 16-22 with real-life skills running a restaurant. 4-1/2 stars - 263 reviews

Primary Election Results
California's primary on June 3 yielded about a 24% turnout among registered voters. San Francisco was a hair better, at roughly 30% turnout. Provisional and other votes remain to be counted in the next few weeks.

* CALIFORNIA *
  • Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom, and Kamala Harris all coasted in their re-election bids. They will each face Republican challengers as part of the top-two outcomes.
  • The race for State Controller remains too close to call.
  • Both statewide propositions (veterans housing and public records) passed with over 60% in favor.
* SAN FRANCISCO *
  • Supervisors David Chiu and David Campos each tallied over 40% of the vote for the State Assembly seat and will face off in the fall.
  • Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Jackie Speier will each face Republican challengers for their districts in November.
  • Measures A (earthquake safety) and B (waterfront development restrictions) both passed.

John's Ice Cream

After a 100-degree day out in the fields picking cherries, peaches, plums, and nectarines, I figured something frosty might hit the spot. One dollar per generous scoop? No line? Exotic flavors like ube and avocado? It makes me wonder, even with higher costs of doing business in San Francisco, how much money premium ice cream sellers are making in town. 4-1/2 stars - 129 reviews

I haven't yet visited the recently opened Jingletown Jazz Room (a part of the massive fermentation factory) in the overflow area of the Fruitvale BART station. I can say, though, that the original fermentation warehouse in Concord, as well as the new tap room a stone's throw from Concord BART, serve up some mighty fine seasonal beer. The Cherry Kush is one such example. I appreciate that they're setting up shop near BART stations -- good for us San Franciscans. Look for them to start appearing in more bar and restaurant menus, not to mention specialty beer shops. 4-1/2 stars - 122 total reviews (Concord); 4 stars - 1 review (Oakland)

We lucked upon this farm, which offered you-pick Lapin cherries. They are seriously the best cherries I can remember tasting, and several others who have tried them reacted the same way. Four dollars per pound. The cherry season is sadly over already, but bookmark this farm for late May next year. I will definitely do my darnedest to go back.
