Just a few months younger than me, Ms. Atkins grew up in New Jersey and later attended school at UNC Charlotte. It is there she got her first taste of the indie music scene that led her to set up residence in Brooklyn. Her band caught the attention of multiple labels and eventually committed to Columbia Records. First opened in 1972, the Sweetwater has hosted many big names, including Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Bonnie Raitt, and Van Morrison. Now reborn as the Music Hall in a new location as of 2012, it rests in the first floor of the 100-plus-year-old Masonic Lodge. Capacity is a slim 250, so your access to the performer is likely very good.

Charity
Bay Leaf Kitchen. This nonprofit offers cooking classes and farming education to children ages 3-17, with a particular focus on seasonal, sustainable ingredients. Guest chefs will stop by during the summer camps, and the junior chefs will host a pop-up restaurant for the first time ever in May.
