Local Food Pick
Homeroom
400 40th St. (at Shafter Ave.)
Oakland, CA 94609
(510) 597-0400

It's a school-themed restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood that almost entirely focuses on macaroni and cheese. I ordered the Mexican Mac, which featured Niman Ranch chorizo, chipotle peppers, and jack cheese. Spicy goodness! There is also a vegan option as well as plenty of add-on ingredients. I liked the card catalog system for storing your frequent member visit cards... always losing those at home. Steps from the MacArthur BART station. 3-1/2 stars - 747 reviews

The Pig & Whistle
2801 Geary Blvd. (at Wood St.)
San Francisco, CA 94118
(415) 885-4779

Besides being steps from two of my last three apartments, this British pub knows how to serve up a pint of beer properly. You'll also find cider on tap as well as other well favorites. Trivia night on Wednesday brings in the crowds, plus a few TVs around the bar will usually showcase the Giants or other sports happenings. A limited food menu serves up Brit specialties like bangers & mash, shepherd's pie, and fish & chips. 4 stars - 291 reviews

Local History
Charles J. Brenham
(1817-1876)

He left his Kentucky roots during his teenage years to work on riverboats on the Mississippi. In 1849, he moved to California and transported passengers between San Francisco and Sacramento. He won election as the 2nd and 4th Mayors of San Francisco in 1851 and 1852, the only SF mayor to win non-consecutive terms. (Elections and the city charters were in a state of flux at that time.) Brenham helped provide police protection to prevent lynchings and mob rule against accused criminals, reduced spending, and increased the water supply to accommodate the soaring population. His attempt in the banking industry ended poorly, and he returned to the steamship industry thereafter. Charles Brenham Way is a short stretch of 7th St. just north of Market St., in the Civic Center area of San Francisco.

Local Food Pick
Olea
1494 California St. (at Larkin St.)
San Francisco, CA 94109

Olea serves brunch three days a week (Friday-Sunday). The cazuela eggs are unique and filling, while the berry-topped French toast is always a hit. I've not been for dinner, which they serve Tuesday-Friday. It's a pain to get to Nob Hill, but step down into an intimately situated space for some affordable elegance. 4 stars - 414 reviews

Local History
Oscar & James Shafter
(1812-1873) / (1816-1892)

During the 1850s, Oscar moved from Vermont to San Francisco and used his litigation skills to start cobbling together land in the Point Reyes area. He convinced his brother to join his title litigation firm in 1856. By 1868, they managed 3,500 cows on 17 dairies and produced over 700,000 pounds of butter annually. James served in the California State Senate, UC Board of Regents, and San Francisco County Superior Court. Oscar, meanwhile, became associate justice on the California Supreme Court. Today, 13 of the 31 dairies still operate, though under new management.

1498 Isabella St. (at Lincoln St.)
Santa Clara, CA 95050

The expansive back patio is the main highlight for the "world famous" Turf Club. It started in 1923 a block away, and moved to its current site in 2002. Free BBQ is offered on Saturday afternoons, and drinks are ridiculously strong. 4 stars - 76 reviews

Local History
Angelo J. Rossi
(1878-1948)

Armed with a sixth-grade education, Mr. Rossi would eventually start his own floral company and become a three-term mayor of San Francisco. He presided over several major New Deal-era constructions: the Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, the Mount Davidson Cross, the Bay Bridge, and City College of San Francisco. His virulently anti-Communist and anti-labor beliefs led to two deaths and 85 injuries during the strike of 1934. Eventually, during World War II, Mr. Rossi was accused of Italian fascist sympathies. He went on to lose the 1943 election. A street and playground in the Inner Richmond are named after him.
