History

Jose de Jesus Noe(1805-1862)

Mr. Noe was born in Puebla, Mexico, but moved northward to California in 1834 with his wife. They would eventually have three sons. He served as the final Mexican mayor of Yerba Buena (San Francisco), until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo changed ownership. His land grant included Noe Valley, Castro, Glen Park, Diamond Heights, and St. Francis Wood. Noe Street, which runs from Duboce Triangle to Noe Valley, is named after him.

History

John A. Sutter, Jr.(1826-1897)

As a Swiss-born teen, he joined his father in California. Sutter's Fort, along with plans to build a city near the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, lay in disarray. His father abandoned him for a miner-related business in Gold Country, and John's health steadily deteriorated. Eventually, he signed a deal that relinquished the land for Sacramento City, though he fought for years while living in Acapulco to receive payment. He married twice and served as U.S. Consul. Numerous schools and streets are named after he and his father in Sacramento and San Francisco.

1. Carnaval

Saturday-Sunday, 10am-6pm

Residents scrounged up donations and volunteers in the last few months to assemble enough funds for the annual event. Eight blocks and two music stages, plus a parade. It'll be held, as usual, along Harrison St., between 16th and 24th St.

2. Memorial Day

Monday sees a host of events across the Bay Area to commemorate fallen troops. I see activities in San Francisco, Mountain View, Hillsborough, Colma, and San Anselmo.

3. Asian American Cultural Festival

Sunday, 11am-4pm

Join the Vice Mayor from Daly City for a free hour of bowling, food trucks, and exhibits.

News: Scientists have determined that the African claw frog is the source of a deadly fungus toward Bay Area frogs.

History

Phillip Burton(1926-1983)

The Ohio-born politician transferred to Washington High, and later attended USC for his B.A. and Golden Gate University for law school. He served in the US Air Force and four terms in the California State Assembly. He then won a special election - and ten terms thereafter - for the U.S. representative of San Francisco. Mr. Burton is often credited with the start of the federal lobbying system and with significant early funding for AIDS research in the Bay Area. After his death, his wife held the position for the next four years, then Nancy Pelosi has been our elected leader ever since. Philip & Sala Burton High School, in Visitacion Valley, and the Philip Burton Federal Building, in Civic Center, are both named after him.

Charity: Re-volv. Quite simple, really. Individual donors contribute to a solar funding pool. The pool then helps build solar energy projects at community centers. The community centers lease the solar equipment, with the payments reinvested into the solar funding pool.

It's another trifecta of large events in San Francisco, this time all related to fitness. Bay to Breakers will have ten official bands along the route, as well as the finish line costume contest and pre-race fitness expo at the Concourse Exhibition Center. The Tour of California makes stops in San Jose, Livermore/Mt. Diablo, and San Francisco/Santa Rosa. And the 21st annual Alcatraz Sharkfest kicks off from Alcatraz to Marina Green. Cheer your hearts out!


2. Food Revolution Day (Friday)

History

Robert T. Livermore(1799-1858)

First a mason's apprentice, then a Naval seaman, and finally a rancher. Mr. Livermore met John Gilroy while in southern California, then settled in the San Jose-Monterey area. He built up land ownings with his business partner Jose Noriega. Once Alameda County formed in 1853, Mr. Livermore served as the first supervisor of roads. Though he never lived there, the city of Livermore is named after him.

Charity

Charity: Re-volv. Quite simple, really. Individual donors contribute to a solar funding pool. The pool then helps build solar energy projects at community centers. The community centers lease the solar equipment, with the payments reinvested into the solar funding pool.

Free Activities

1. Stanford Powwow: Friday 5-11pm, Saturday 11:30am-11pm, Sunday 11:30am-6pm
Over 25,000 are expected to attend the popular event, now in its 42nd year. Tribal groups will compete in several dance and drum competitions.

2. Yoga Festival: Sunday, noon-5pm

Bright spandex and unrolled mats will dot Little Marina Green for the free group yoga classes, musical performances, and lectures. Make sure you RSVP online!

3. Mother's Day: Sunday

- Aquarium of the Bay, 10am-8pm

- Schultz Museum, 10am-5pm

- Free Roses, 4pm
In addition to free admission, moms will be treated to special animal presentations about maternal facets of the real world. Or, if you happen to be wine tasting in Sonoma County, take a breather at the museum dedicated to the Peanuts creator. As part of the closure for the afternoon rose show at Golden Gate Park's County Fair Building, the public is encouraged to retrieve the discarded roses.
