Issue: Decreasing sales tax revenue on Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue.
"Students are not going there. It's not a regional draw. We need to make it a welcoming, comfortable, and fun place for everyone to visit."
 - Tom Bates, Berkeley Mayor
"I know Berkeley's big into local businesses, but the fact is they're overpriced. I hate to say it, but I'm a chain store girl. I like Target. That's what I'd like to see on Telegraph."
 - Jael Cook, 23-year-old Berkeley resident
"Everything around here costs too much, including tuition. Here's the best way to reinvigorate Telegraph: We all need to be younger."
 - Julia Vinograd, "Bubble Lady" and Cal alum from the '60s

I was so discouraged by a recent unsuccessful attempt to dine at Potrero Hill's Chez Maman. The wait exceeded an hour for the tiny French bistro serving up quality French Onion soup, croque madames, and burgers. An idea struck this week: its outpost in Hayes Valley, which opened last July, is larger and less busy. The moules mariniere, baked camembert with garlic, and creamy veal with mashed potatoes did not disappoint. No wait either! 4 stars - 130 reviews (Hayes); 4-1/2 stars - 1122 reviews (Potrero Hill)

History
Anson Burlingame(1820-1870)
The New Yorker grew up in Ohio and Michigan, and later graduated from Harvard Law School. His activism in Massachusetts on behalf of the Free Soil Party, Know Nothing Party, and Republican Party landed him in Congress for three terms. He famously defended Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner on the Senate floor after a physical attack by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks. Mr. Burlingame accepted an offer to duel in Canada with Mr. Brooks, who then cancelled. He later served under President Lincoln as a foreign minister, and helped craft the Burlingame Treaty with China, as well as other accords with Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Prussia. Land he purchased in San Mateo County later became the city of Burlingame.

Such a cool idea. For seven years, Urban Tilth has worked to bring agriculture to urban areas of Richmond and San Pablo. The program has partnered with schools, nonprofits, corporations, and government and now coordinates 12 small farms and three churches. The Greenway Community Garden, in the heart of the Iron Triangle, and the Kennedy High Farm and Garden are two great examples. Earlier this month, Richmond High hosted a student-run salad bar for lunch by using harvested lettuce and lemons, and student-made salad dressings.

Help celebrate its 40th anniversary! Absolutely, these are the best tacos I've had in the Bay Area. Make sure you order the tacos dorados, as you'll get both a crispy and soft layer of shell. My preference is for the carnitas, or crispy pork, but you can be brave and order cabeza (brain) or lengua (tongue). 4 stars - 1482 reviews

I didn't think I'd make it to 22 years old
There must be someone up above singing

 - Oakland Mayor Jean Quan
"It's definitely gotten bigger than we planned, and now we have to find a way to handle it."
 - Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan

Yelp
This much-revered breakfast nook has moved from one rough part of town to another, as it remains a solid anchor of the Sixth Street redevelopment plan. I highly recommend the black bean cakes, whiskey-fennel sausage scramble, and homemade cornbread. There was no wait today at lunch, but I suspect the epic weekend lines remain even at this larger location. A second branch has been opened out in Scottsdale, Ariz. 4 stars - 1965 reviews

Ah, the memories here. I do miss the days of Vicki Marlane and Gina La Divina trotting the floor as part of a memorable drag show. It's still a cheap thrill most of the time, and DJ Bus Station John throws a hip Thursday dance night. 4 stars - 152 reviews

Bay Area History
George R. Moscone
(1929-1978)
Born and raised in San Francisco, Mr. Moscone attended St. Ignatius, University of the Pacific, and UC Hastings. After some time spent with the US Navy and a private law practice, he began his career in politics with the SF Board of Supervisors and the California State Senate. He joined with Assemblyman Willie Brown to pass a bill repealing California's sodomy law, which was signed by Governor Jerry Brown. Then, in 1975, he defeated Dianne Feinstein and John Barbagelata to become the 37th mayor of San Francisco. The Peoples Temple voted overwhelmingly for him, and Mr. Moscone returned the favor by appointing Jim Jones as Chairman of the SF Housing Commission. As mayor, he blocked the SF Giants' planned move to Toronto and advocated for district elections of the Board of Supervisors. A disgruntled former supervisor, Dan White, assassinated Mr. Moscone (along with Harvey Milk) at City Hall. Moscone Center, the main convention center, is named after him.

Bay Area Charity

Richmond, CA 94801

Such a cool idea. For seven years, Urban Tilth has worked to bring agriculture to urban areas of Richmond and San Pablo. The program has partnered with schools, nonprofits, corporations, and government and now coordinates 12 small farms and three churches. The Greenway Community Garden, in the heart of the Iron Triangle, and the Kennedy High Farm and Garden are two great examples. Earlier this month, Richmond High hosted a student-run salad bar for lunch by using harvested lettuce and lemons, and student-made salad dressings.
