"I
am concerned about it. But we'd already been pumping up security for
the event. Merchant groups have hired extra security. We will soon have
more lighting."
- Oakland Mayor Jean Quan
"It's definitely gotten bigger than we planned, and now we have to find a way to handle it."
- Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan
"The Oakland Art Murmur is deeply saddened and shocked by the
tragic shooting that occurred in the Uptown area last Friday night....
This is another example of the epidemic gun violence erupting across
America."
- Oakland Art Murmur, a nonprofit that founded the monthly event
"We
are directing concerned community members to an altar that has been set
up at the site of his passing, on Telegraph Ave. near 20th St. in
Oakland."

This
much-revered breakfast nook has moved from one rough part of town to
another, as it remains a solid anchor of the Sixth Street redevelopment
plan. I highly recommend the black bean cakes, whiskey-fennel sausage
scramble, and homemade cornbread. There was no wait today at lunch, but I
suspect the epic weekend lines remain even at this larger location. A
second branch has been opened out in Scottsdale, Ariz. 4 stars - 1965 reviews

Ah, the memories here. I do miss the days of Vicki Marlane and Gina La Divina
trotting the floor as part of a memorable drag show. It's still a cheap
thrill most of the time, and DJ Bus Station John throws a hip Thursday dance night. 4 stars - 152 reviews

Bay Area History
George R. Moscone(1929-1978)
Born and raised in San Francisco, Mr. Moscone attended St. Ignatius, University of the Pacific, and UC Hastings.
After some time spent with the US Navy and a private law practice, he
began his career in politics with the SF Board of Supervisors and the
California State Senate. He joined with Assemblyman Willie Brown to pass
a bill repealing California's sodomy law, which was signed by Governor
Jerry Brown. Then, in 1975, he defeated Dianne Feinstein and John Barbagelata to become the
37th mayor of San Francisco. The Peoples Temple voted overwhelmingly for
him, and Mr. Moscone returned the favor by appointing Jim Jones as
Chairman of the SF Housing Commission. As mayor, he blocked the SF
Giants' planned move to Toronto and advocated for district elections of
the Board of Supervisors. A disgruntled former supervisor, Dan White, assassinated Mr. Moscone (along with Harvey Milk) at City Hall. Moscone Center, the main convention center, is named after him.

Such a cool
idea. For seven years, Urban Tilth has worked to bring agriculture to
urban areas of Richmond and San Pablo. The program has partnered with
schools, nonprofits, corporations, and government and now coordinates 12
small farms and three churches. The Greenway Community Garden, in the
heart of the Iron Triangle, and the Kennedy High Farm and Garden are two
great examples. Earlier this month, Richmond High hosted a student-run
salad bar for lunch by using harvested lettuce and lemons, and
student-made salad dressings.
