Current Event
In
the ongoing displacement and income inequality saga, Google has agreed
to donate $6.8 million to San Francisco. This will fund free MUNI bus
passes for children aged 5 to 17 in low- and middle-income families.
"Google is demonstrating with real action and real resources that they
are a true partner in addressing our city's affordability crisis for
lower and middle-income families."
-- Mayor Ed Lee
"There are still more discussions to be had around the future of free MUNI for low- and middle-income youths and other issues
around affordability."
-- Supervisor David Campos
"As a mother and part of the Mission community, I can see a lot of fear
of how the neighborhood is changing. A lot of people like me are leaving
the city."
-- Donaji Lona, Mission District resident and single mother of two children

Yelp
It's
a must to try tacos prepared Nick's Way at least once. They're fried
crispy and given healthy doses of cheese and guacamole. I've only braved
Taco Tuesday one time, and if you're willing to wait in line, your
reward will be $2 tacos. As a perk, Niman Ranch and Fulton Valley
provide the meats, while the produce is local and organic. 4 stars -

History
George Sterling
(1869-1926)
He escaped Long Island by following his uncle to San Francisco in 1890. After several years as a real estate broker, he soared in Bay Area circles as a poet. He was admitted to the exclusive Bohemian Club as an artist, often performing at the annual retreat in Sonoma County. He committed suicide by cyanide at his residence in the Bohemian Club. Sterling Park, near the start of the famed twisty section of Lombard Street, and Berkeley's Sterling Road are named after him.

The menu is a bit small. You can order beef soup, or simply a

noodles and a very peculiar but tasty broth. You'll get two types of
kimchee, a bowl of rice, salt/pepper, hot paste, and a huge bottle of
green onions. It's $8.72 plus tax. Great hole-in-the-wall! 4-1/2 stars -

The
electronic music pioneers finally received a Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Grammy Academy last month. The German duo formed in 1970,
though one of them left the group in 2008. Kraftwerk often relies on a
vocoder or computer speech software for lyrics used in their music.
Catch them at three 3D concerts (two of which are sold out) at Oakland's
Fox Theater, March 23-25.

Current Event
Finally, a coordinated police effort will help deter bicycle theft and
return stolen bikes to their owners. A bike theft victim heads the
registry program, entitled SAFE Bikes.
"Pretty
much every week I heard someone say in a community meeting that a
bicycle was stolen... that's why I came up with the proposal to start
this program."
-- Morgan St. Clair, SAFE Bikes operator
"There
is a sharp spike in our ability to return stolen bicycles to people.
It's also creating a large amount of really good will with the citizens when we are returning their stolen property."
-- John Elder, Minneapolis Police Department Public Information Officer
"Many
officers have arrested a number of those folks. We know how these
people are. We will continue to do whatever we can to stop the behavior
from occurring."
-- Matt Friedman, San Francisco Police Officer - Park Station

From
the amuse bouche to dessert, this neighborhood gem provides a warm,
welcoming stay much akin to that experienced at previous picks Firefly
or L'Ardoise Bistro. The menu rotates, and right now I spy
tasty-sounding fried chicken and house-ground cheeseburger entrees.
You'll probably even get to meet the chef, even on a bustling weekend
night. 4-1/2 stars - 424 reviews

Certainly,
it's a dive bar, first and foremost. Shots of whiskey and cans of
Tecate are common orders. But, unlike many of its brethren, this place
is relatively large and offers entertainment options such as skeeball,
shuffleboard, and arcade games. Along the rear wall sits the food
window, where you can partake in hot wings, candy bacon, or mac 'n'
cheese. I've only seen this on a weeknight, and from reviews it sounds
like it can be a tad crowded and dancey on a weekend. 4 stars - 598

Music
Just to be by your side
I would walk through the flames
Now it hurts me inside
Just to hear your name.
-- "I Learned the Hard Way," by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (771,000 views; Aug '10 upload)
Using
old-school analog recording, this funk revivalist band from Brooklyn
sounds straight out of 1970. The lead Georgia-born singer battled
pancreatic cancer in 2013, yet you may recall them performing on a float
during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade that same year. Now their
sixth album has been released in the past month, and they're going on
tour. San Francisco's Fillmore will host them for three rockin' nights,
March 27-29. I've seen her at Stern Grove. I've seen her at Hardly
Strictly. You won't be sorry to see their high-energy show!

My
parents fondly recall going here in their earlier days. Since 1951, the French Dip sandwiches
- primarily ordered with beef, though you can opt for lamb, pork, ham,
or turkey - are the main attraction. Coffee is 45 cents, cheese on our
dip is 40 cents, and fresh cookies are 85 cents. You'll find sawdust on
the floor, ten sandwich makers spaced along the deli counter, and dozens
of tables in the sprawling, two-story building. Can't wait to go again!

History
Griffith J. Griffith
(1850-1919)
The
Welshman immigrated to Pennsylvania as a teenager, then moved to San
Francisco in 1873 to become a manager for a publishing company. He then
joined a local newspaper and grew his wealth as a mining expert.
Griffith purchased 4,000 acres in Los Angeles, and eventually donated
3/4 of that to the City as a public space, which was quickly named
Griffith Park. In an odd twist, in 1903, he shot his wife (which
disfigured her) and was sentenced to two years at San Quentin. They
divorced, and she retained custody of the son. In 1912, Griffith
bequeathed most of his estate for the construction of the Greek Theater
and Griffith Observatory, which were both finished about 20 years later.
