News of the Week
Two California Assembly representatives want to pass a law forbidding the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District from enacting a toll on pedestrians and cyclists who cross the Golden Gate Bridge. This follows an October 24 vote by the district's Board to study the feasibility of charging a toll. Back in 1970, the pedestrian toll was eliminated after over three decades.

"Charging people to bike or walk across the bridge is a big step in the wrong direction."
-- Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), Assemblyman

"We believe access to public spaces should be free and fair."
-- Natalie Burdick, Walk SF director

"It's a decision that is very out of step with the Bay Area values of promoting sustainability and healthy ways of getting around."
-- Kristin Smith, SF Bike Coalition director

"I can't believe that anybody would not go through the necessary research to see what the numbers show, and then make a decision about whether at that point it's appropriate to charge a fee or not charge a fee."
-- Brian Sobel, GGBHT District board director, Sonoma County

News of the Week
18-year-old St. Francis High senior Riley Quinn is a straight-A student and star three-sport athlete, with a football scholarship to University of San Diego already in tow. He is also missing his left forearm, which might remind some of former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott, a man Riley met in a chance encounter.

"Not having that hand just made him work that much harder and made his passion burn that much deeper."
 -- Chris Quinn, Riley's father

"The idea that I am handicapped has never entered my mind. Instead, I use what others may call a physical disability as my driving force and motivation to excel at everything I do."
 -- Riley Quinn

"He's just inspiring by himself.... If there's something to do or accomplish, he's going to get it done."
-- Steven Dinneen, St. Francis linebacker

"I've seen the next level a lot in my lifetime, and he can play there.... He wants to compete, and he wants to be the best."
-- Dwaine Board, St. Francis assistant coach and former 49ers lineman

I've brought a lamb shawerma from this hole-in-the-wall into Elixir (see below). While prices have gone up here by a couple of bucks since my first visit over 10 years ago, the food is still very much worth it. Since 1858, Elixir has been slinging cocktails to area denizens... even during Prohibition, when it was listed as a "soft drink parlor" in the City's business directory. The building itself was carefully restored in 2003, with the insertion of new taps for beer aficionados. Tuesday trivia and Monday bingo help bring in the crowds on slower nights, but every day you can expect expert cocktails.

Nooks & Crannies
Heron's Head Park
San Francisco, CA

The 22-acre wetlands was dramatically transformed from Pier 98 and opened to the public in 1999. This renovation involved removing over 5,000 tons of debris, creating a tidal channel, and constructing trails and viewing areas. More recently, additional improvements have included an off-leash dog run, dedicated bike lane to the park, bike racks, picnic tables, and the EcoCenter.

Randy's Guide 4-1-1

Music
Life and death is no mystery, and I wanna taste it
Step inside of my mind, and you'll find
Curiosity, animosity, high philosophy like the prophesied meditation
-- "Never Catch Me," by Flying Lotus, featuring Kendrick Lamar (3.0 million views, Oct '14 upload)

Flying Lotus delves into experimental rap, and he's caught the attention of some big names in collaborating with Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Radiohead's Thom Yorke. He'll be gracing the stage at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on New Year's Eve, along with earlier Randy's Guide artist Pretty Lights.

News of the Week
About 18,000 nurses went on a two-day strike this week at 21 Northern California Kaiser Permanente hospitals. At issue during the contract negotiations are staffing shortages, inadequate patient care, and better Ebola precautions.

"We’re a little disappointed they’ve chosen now - as the flu season is coming and everyone is concerned about the potential of Ebola becoming a national crisis - as the time to strike."
-- Odette Bolano, Kaiser Permanente manager for the East Bay region

"Our issue is not money; this is about patient care. Unfortunately, it's come to this."
-- Robert Marth, San Leandro Kaiser Permanente crisis nurse

"It's open enrollment season for me, but I could leave Kaiser and go to Blue Cross or another health plan. I'll have to do more research."
-- Robert Tereck, Kaiser member in Walnut Creek

It's a local classic, operating since 1948. Gotta order things Christmas-style -- that's a mixture of New Mexico red and green chile sauces. Gotta order the  Adovada, which is a pulled pork stew in a fragrant red chile sauce. The sopaipillas are billowy, puffed fried dough to be sprinkled with honey. Wow.

Though I wasn't an avid watcher, many of you might recognize this name from the television series, Breaking Bad. The beer is fairly good too, with the usual favorites like the IPA and Wildflower Wheat. I opted for the seasonal selection, with interesting takes on pumpkin and the nitro trend. It has also opened two tap rooms, one in Santa Fe, and one on the ABQ Westside.
