Today is Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins' 71st and Scotland's Hogmanay; Thursday is New Year's Day and novelist J.D. Salinger's 90th; Friday is model Christy Turlington's 40th; Saturday is retired champion race car driver Michael Schumacher's 40th; Sunday is Burma's Independence Day; Monday is Spanish King Juan Carlos I's 71st; Tuesday is Three Kings Day; and Wednesday is television host Katie Couric's 52nd.

Charity to consider: Natural Resources Defense Council. Reader Rene L. is a proud worker for NRDC and recommended its inclusion in the Guide. I appreciate its multi-pronged approach to environmental issues, with pressure placed upon various levels of our government. Though headquartered in New York City, NRDC has a regional office here in San Francisco. www.nrdc.org
