It's the southern answer to our $4 toast or $15 ramen. You start with a $3 biscuit and add assorted toppings such as a gravy flight or housemade vegan chorizo. A wide selection of jams and chutneys await you in the center of the cafe. Under our table was a terrarium of assorted low-water plants. Definitely worth a stop!

Music
So you lost your head inside your heart
And the weighty world tore it apart
And you've all but given up
On the stone you call a heart, you're singing out

The orchestral rock group based in San Francisco has used Kickstarter, Craigslist, and Pirate Cat Radio as part of their attempts to get two albums out into the world. Their music has since appeared at a Grammy Awards party, an NBC television drama, and a Carnival Cruise commercials. Catch them at The Independent on October 22, with Andrew St. James opening.

One of those D.C. institutions (since 1958) with lots of famous photos on the wall. The chili cheese fries (either beef or vegetarian) are phenomenal, but there are other options like a veggie dog, turkey burger, or tuna sub. Locations have since expanded to Reagan Airport, FedEx Field, and Arlington, Virginia.

-- "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness (1.7 million views; July '14 upload)
The British rock quartet struck fame quickly with its debut album, as it hit number one on the UK charts and earned three BRIT awards (the Grammy comparable in the UK). The top track (above) was featured in a Super Bowl commercial for Samsung, covered by Adam Lambert during Glee, and is often played by Panic! at the Disco at live shows. After a multi-year hiatus, three of the four original band members have reunited. The band plays locally at the Regency Ballroom on October 11, with These Raven Skies opening.

Check out the Blue Angels air show, the ship tours, Pier 80 Fleet Fest, and Marina Green Festival to support your military.

2. Ocean Beach Music Festival
Saturday, 11am-7pm
If HSB didn't fill you up, perhaps six-stage event on Outer Noriega will. A pumpkin patch, petting zoo, and two beer gardens complement the tunes.

3. Viva Calle SJ
Sunday, 10am-3pm
In a nod to San Francisco's wildly popular Sunday Streets, San Jose is hosting its first open-streets event between St. James Park and Emma Prusch Farm Park. That's a six-mile route closed to automobiles! Somehow, the event has put together an exhibition showcasing the eight Raiders and 49ers Lombardi trophies... my how times have changed.
