Today is Welsh actor Sir Anthony Hopkins' 71st and Scotland's Hogmanay; Thursday is New Year's Day and novelist J.D. Salinger's 90th; Friday is model Christy Turlington's 40th; Saturday is retired champion race car driver Michael Schumacher's 40th; Sunday is Burma's Independence Day; Monday is Spanish King Juan Carlos I's 71st; Tuesday is Three Kings Day; and Wednesday is television host Katie Couric's 52nd.

"Carry On" by Dizzy Balloon (Piedmont, Calif.)

Formerly known as Panda (before realizing that a Mexican band had already claimed that name), the youthful quintet claimed victory as the local band to be represented in tonight's Not So Silent Night concert at the Oracle Arena, alongside The Killers and Death Cab for Cutie. You can catch them at smaller venues in Pleasanton, Modesto, Larkspur, Los Gatos, Oakland, and Lodi over the next month.
