Randy's Guide 4-1-0

Music
Take me someplace where there's music and there's laughter
I don't know if I'm scared of dying
But I'm scared of living too fast, too slow
Regret, remorse, hold on, oh no I've got to go
-- "My Silver Lining," by First Aid Kit (1.79 million views; May '14 upload)

At various times, the Swedish sisters have been musically linked to Conor Oberst, Jenny Lewis, Fleet Foxes, and Lykke Li. Their third album has topped the charts in Sweden and Norway. News of the Week
Twitter's building on Market Street will have a new tenant soon: Market on Market. It'll be an upscale supermarket with a sushi shop and taco bar, as well as six subtenants such as Blue Bottle Coffee and Farmgirl Flowers. Two other locations - one on Polk Street, the other in the Financial District - are already in the works.

"When we get our feet grounded, we would love to do more. We believe this is what people want in a high-density urban environment."
-- Chris Foley, Market on Market co-investor

"You could have a food store on virtually every block - like Starbucks. To have 15 locations, to hit the San Francisco limit, would not be a problem."
 -- Helen Bulwik, grocer consultant

"It will function like a food court with a limited offering of wine, savory snacks, and meat. It's not built for the soccer mom walking out with three or four bags of groceries.... Anything that makes Whole Foods look like a value, I am all for."
-- Matt Holmes, Retail West commercial real estate partner

San Francisco, CA 94109

Yelp - 4 stars (1976 reviews)

The place hasn't changed much since 1947. Well, maybe the prices. Even then, dinner platters - with fresh carved meats - are less than $10. You'll even find a unique buffalo stew served over rice. A full bar exists across from the cafeteria-style line, including some decently priced local brews on tap.

Nightlife
Great American Music Hall
859 O'Farrell St
San Francisco, CA 94109

Yelp - 4-1/2 stars (712 reviews)

What a classic venue, on the fringe of the Tenderloin. It first opened in 1907 as a restaurant and bordello, but now features some great mid-tier acts. You can literally see the sweat on their faces. Now, premium balcony seats are reserved for those who do the dining package (which is totally unnecessary). Just show up for the opening act, and you'll have a great view of the main act.
