Randy's Guide 4-1-2

Music
It used to be, it was just my house
And it used to be, it was just my tongue
But the devil's caught on like the teeth of a shark
And I wanna make it back from the dark, dark, dark

News of the Week
18-year-old St. Francis High senior Riley Quinn is a straight-A student and star three-sport athlete, with a football scholarship to University of San Diego already in tow. He is also missing his left forearm, which might remind some of former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott, a man Riley met in a chance encounter.

"Not having that hand just made him work that much harder and made his passion burn that much deeper."
 -- Chris Quinn, Riley's father

"The idea that I am handicapped has never entered my mind. Instead, I use what others may call a physical disability as my driving force and motivation to excel at everything I do."
 -- Riley Quinn

"He's just inspiring by himself.... If there's something to do or accomplish, he's going to get it done."
-- Steven Dinneen, St. Francis linebacker

"I've seen the next level a lot in my lifetime, and he can play there.... He wants to compete, and he wants to be the best."
-- Dwaine Board, St. Francis assistant coach and former 49ers lineman

I've brought a lamb shawerma from this hole-in-the-wall into Elixir (see below). While prices have gone up here by a couple of bucks since my first visit over 10 years ago, the food is still very much worth it. The falafel side order is a fantastic snack for those looking for something vegetarian and affordable.

Nightlife
Elixir

Yelp (4 stars - 557 reviews)

Since 1858, Elixir has been slinging cocktails to area denizens... even during Prohibition, when it was listed as a "soft drink parlor" in the City's business directory. The building itself was carefully restored in 2003, with the insertion of new taps for beer aficionados. Tuesday trivia and Monday bingo help bring in the crowds on slower nights, but every day you can expect expert cocktails.

Nooks & Crannies
Heron's Head Park
San Francisco, CA

The 22-acre wetlands was dramatically transformed from Pier 98 and opened to the public in 1999. This renovation involved removing over 5,000 tons of debris, creating a tidal channel, and constructing trails and viewing areas. More recently, additional improvements have included an off-leash dog run, dedicated bike lane to the park, bike racks, picnic tables, and the EcoCenter.
