Randy's Guide 3-8-9

Music
I'd love to collapse with you
And ease you against this song
I think we're compatible
I see that you think I'm wrong
-- "Will Do," by TV on the Radio (3 million views; Mar '11 upload)

Current Event
As part of a new police strategy called CeaseFire, Oakland crime seems to be on the decline. Shootings have dropped 35% versus last year, while robberies have decreased 38%.

"Police strategy plays a role, and I think the community outreach and activism play a role."
-- Sean Whent, Oakland's police chief

"It is clear from the statistics that the trends over time have turned encouraging .... There is still an important distinction between celebration of good news and announcing conclusions about cause and effect."
-- Frank Zimring, UC Berkeley School of Law professor

"The police did not listen to our concerns. But right now, everybody is important. When we have a graffiti cleanup, (the police) will show up, and... it makes the fear factor go away."
-- Thu Pham, 21-year Oakland resident

What a find. It's in a strip mall with a Domino's and a consignment shop. The place specializes in Laotian cuisine such as nam kao (crispy rice salad) and nuer num thoke (beef salad). I had the pad makeur rice plate (beef with eggplant) for $6.95. What a deal. 4-1/2 stars - 95 reviews

It looks like time has just about run out on the final two inhabitants living on this peninsula jutting out onto San Francisco Bay. Landfill blossomed from 1939 to 1983, when lawsuits halted the dumping. It remains a popular recreation area, and could be the target for future development.
