William R. Kimball
(1919-2005)
Born and raised in Utah, Mr. Kimball studied economics at Stanford and then served five years in the Pacific during WWII. He co-founded Alpine Meadows in North Lake Tahoe, became president of Stanford's Board of Trustees, and was a fiberglass pioneer via his company, Kimball Manufacturing. He donated $3 million to Stanford for the construction of Kimball Hall, and the Kimball National History Museum at the California Academy of Sciences is named after him.

1. Coastal Clean-Up Day
Saturday, 9am-noon
Coastal regions - whether ocean, river, or lake - need our help. Last year, volunteers collected about 770,000 pounds of trash in California as part of this event. Refreshments and other freebies are offered at several of the sites.
2. Tour de Fat
Saturday, noon-5pm
Bike costumes, a car-for-bike trade contest, live music and strange entertainment, all in Golden Gate Park's Lindley Meadow. Benefits SF Bike Coalition and Bay Area Ridge Trail Council.
3. PARK(ing) Day
Friday, various hours
It's a global event that transforms parking spaces into public community areas. San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Los Altos are among the cities with pop-up mini parks.
