Treasure Island
(1939-present)
Originally a shipping hazard with its jutting rocks, Treasure Island is man-made using quarried rock, sand, and soil. In 1942, the U.S. Navy seized Treasure Island as part of the WWII effort, decommissioned it in 1996, and then sold the island back to San Francisco in 2009 for $105 million. Nash Bridges and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade have been filmed here. A recent redevelopment plan calls for up to 8,000 new residences and 140,000 square feet of commercial/retail space.

Free Activities
1. Green Festival
Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday, 11am-5pm
Since 2002, this event has only grown in magnitude and corporate involvement to become what is arguably the best free festival in San Francisco. Non-profits, schools, investment firms, craftspeople, food purveyors, booksellers, guest speakers, cooking demos. . . all I can say is bring good walking shoes and a tote bag to carry your free handouts (or purchased goods). The Concourse Exhibition Center is large, and there are usually five or six columns of vendors. It's free for cyclists who bike valet there, youths, Rainbow Grocery receipt holders, and donors of four canned goods to the Food Bank.
2. Journey to the End of the Night
Saturday 6pm
It's a global phenomenon. Think of it as a scavenger hunt by foot. The catch is that there are chasers who attempt to tag you out of the hunt. If tagged, then you become a chaser. It could very well be a great way to bond with friends, explore the City on foot (or transit), and get in some exercise. Meet at Everett Middle School (Church/16th), and RSVP online.
3. Open Art Studios - Hunters Point
Saturday-Sunday, 11am-6pm
Dozens of artists reveal their work at the Hunters Point and Islais Creek Shipyard studios. You will be amazed at how packed the massive parking lots will be upon arrival. Last year was my first time on the Point, and I'm making every effort to return.

Charity
Charity: Prevent Blindness. The Northern California chapters in San Francisco and Redding have screened over one million individuals for vision since 1966. Recently, they partnered with fuseproject to launch See Well to Learn, which provides free eye exams and glasses to Bay Area students.

Free Activities
1. Green Festival
Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday, 11am-5pm
Since 2002, this event has only grown in magnitude and corporate involvement to become what is arguably the best free festival in San Francisco. Non-profits, schools, investment firms, craftspeople, food purveyors, booksellers, guest speakers, cooking demos. . . all I can say is bring good walking shoes and a tote bag to carry your free handouts (or purchased goods). The Concourse Exhibition Center is large, and there are usually five or six columns of vendors. It's free for cyclists who bike valet there, youths, Rainbow Grocery receipt holders, and donors of four canned goods to the Food Bank.
2. Journey to the End of the Night
Saturday 6pm
It's a global phenomenon. Think of it as a scavenger hunt by foot. The catch is that there are chasers who attempt to tag you out of the hunt. If tagged, then you become a chaser. It could very well be a great way to bond with friends, explore the City on foot (or transit), and get in some exercise. Meet at Everett Middle School (Church/16th), and RSVP online.
3. Open Art Studios - Hunters Point
Saturday-Sunday, 11am-6pm
Dozens of artists reveal their work at the Hunters Point and Islais Creek Shipyard studios. You will be amazed at how packed the massive parking lots will be upon arrival. Last year was my first time on the Point, and I'm making every effort to return.
