Bay Area History
George Davidson
(1825-1911)
The Englishman's family settled in Pennsylvania when he was seven. After extensive studies in the sciences, he moved to the west coast as part of the Coast Survey, which determined the latitude and longitude of capes, bays, and potential lighthouse locations. Mr. Davidson founded the first astronomical observatory on the Pacific coast of North America, and served as president of the California Academy of Sciences for 16 years. Mount Davidson, the highest point in San Francisco, is named after him.

Such a cool idea. For seven years, Urban Tilth has worked to bring agriculture to urban areas of Richmond and San Pablo. The program has partnered with schools, nonprofits, corporations, and government and now coordinates 12 small farms and three churches. The Greenway Community Garden, in the heart of the Iron Triangle, and the Kennedy High Farm and Garden are two great examples. Earlier this month, Richmond High hosted a student-run salad bar for lunch by using harvested lettuce and lemons, and student-made salad dressings.

Bay Area Free Activities of the Week
The monthly East Bay Bike Party kicks off at 7:30pm on Friday from the Bayview BART station. Wear your superhero costume for full effect.
Then, on Sunday, change into some cool underwear for the 12th annual No Pants BART Day. More than 600 participated last year. Look on the website for boarding times, which put you into Montgomery or Civic Center around 1:30pm.
Concurrently, there's a new bakery being opened by Michael Jackson's former personal chef in Oakland's Uptown district. The Sweet Bar Bakery celebration, on Sunday from 1-3pm, will include free refreshments and the Bay Area Flash Mob.
