Randy's Guide 4-2-9

Music
You better save the country
You better pass the flask
You better join the army
I said: no thank you dear old Uncle Sam
-- "Who Needs You," by The Orwells (1.4 million views; Aug '13 upload)

They started in high school in a leafy Chicago suburb, connected as family friends and a love of music. And now, The Orwells have cracked into Lollapalooza, MTV, David Letterman, and NPR... plus opened for Arctic Monkeys last year at nine shows with two albums in hand. The local stop is at LIVE 105's BFD concert on June 6 at Shoreline.

News of the Week
A single-room-occupancy (or SRO) hotel at 2 Emery Lane in Chinatown is the latest flash point between developers and long-time residents. Chinese seniors and young families live in 100-square-foot rooms and share kitchens and bathrooms, but 24 eviction notices (out of 32 total units) have been served since October. Four units have already been cleared out since Emery Vallejo LLC acquired the property 16 months ago, with the replacements being young professionals.

"Your predatory practices constitute nothing less than rent gouging - exploiting the housing crisis in an attempt to charge upscale rents for the City's shelter of last resort."
-- letter to building owner Emery Vallejo LLC

"We are intimidated by the garbageman the property owners hired. He says things like 'don't you think that you can live here forever because I will get rid of every one of you.'"
-- Xue Yan Dai, building resident

"When we took over the property, like a lot of SRO hotels in Chinatown, it was riddled with building code violations and health code violations. We came in and upgraded the life safety and got rid of the health code violations.... We pride ourselves on being one of the best managers of SROs in the neighborhood."
-- Sterling Heatley, Paragon Real Estate vice president

"This is the most direct indicator we have seen of gentrification in Chinatown."
-- Gen Fujioka, Chinatown Community Development Center manager

Food
Phil's Kitchen
625 Oak Grove Ave
Menlo Park, CA 94025
(650) 561-4296
Yelp - 4 stars (295 reviews)

The menu is fairly sprawling, encompassing Hawaiian, Chinese, and Vietnamese cuisine. It's a cheap take-out spot that took over Mr. Chau's (for the better) near Stanford campus. I also spy party trays, which could be very handy for upcoming occasions in spring and summer!

The Dutch Goose
3567 Alameda de las Pulgas
Menlo Park, CA 94025
(650) 854-3245
Yelp - 4 stars (479 reviews)

Another area classic, the Goose has been around since 1966, with much of its staff on hand for at least a decade. It's another throw-the-peanut-shells-on-the-floor kind of place. They've got about a dozen beers on tap (ranging from Coors Light and Stella to Racer 5 and Firestone), along with about a dozen wines by the glass and a fairly sizable bar food menu. Parking is a little tricky!

Charity
Rising Sun Energy Center

Besides the subtle allusion to my heritage, this nonprofit combines several key areas: environmentalism, education, unemployment. Over the past 20 years, Rising Sun has trained and employed over 1,000 young adults and 600 under-employed adults, and helped nearly 30,000 households with energy and water upgrades in the East Bay.
