Juan Bautista de Anza
(1736-1788)
The Spanish explorer, born in Mexico, started conducting expeditions through the Southwest during the 1770s. He helped establish the sites for Mission San Francisco de Asis and the Presidio of San Francisco. As Governor of present-day New Mexico, de Anza raided Comanche forces who had been battling Taos. Places referencing his name include Anza Street (which runs through San Francisco's Richmond District), Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Cupertino's De Anza College, and Berkeley's Lake Anza.
