Joel H. Clayton
(1812-1872)
Mr. Clayton emigrated from England to the U.S. when he was 25. He met his future wife in Wisconsin, then took the Oregon Trail to settle in California. Mr. Clayton opened businesses with his brothers in Stockton, San Francisco, and the eastern Contra Costa County area. They bought land and laid out the towns of Clayton and Antioch.
