Randy's Guide CCLXXX (280)

Local Food Pick
Bakesale Betty
5098 Telegraph Ave. (at 51st St.)
Oakland, CA 94609

The folding ironing board tables are the first clue you're in for a treat. When lines are persistent, a worker (occasionally Betty herself) has come out to offer complimentary homemade cookies. I highly recommend the fried chicken sandwich (topped with a spicy slaw) and strawberry shortcake. A second location sits in the Uptown district open only for Tuesday lunches. 2661 reviews - 4.5 stars

Local History
Jose Dario Arguello (1753-1828): Arguello helped found the Los Angeles settlement in 1781, and served as commandant of the Presidio of San Francisco from 1787-1791 and 1796-1806. For his work, he was issued a land grant covering much of San Mateo County, including the present-day cities of San Mateo, San Carlos, Redwood City, and Menlo Park. He later was appointed governor of Alta California and Baja California. Arguello Boulevard, which runs north-south through the Richmond district and a small portion of the Sunset district, replaces 1st Ave. in San Francisco and is named in his honor.

Local Charity
Organization: KQED (88.5 FM). Founded in 1969, this NPR-member radio station ranks nationwide as number one for listeners and number one for Bay Area radio stations as of last summer. Radio personalities such as Michael Krasny, Terry Gross, and Neal Conan deliver sharp commentaries and intellectual debates on topical issues. The latest listener-based donor drive is underway.
