Randy's Guide CCXLV (245)

Historic milestones: 28 years since Sally Ride's historic space flight; 33 years since the first Garfield comic strip; 72 years since the last French public guillotine death; and 153 years since President Lincoln's "House Divided" speech.

Local Food Pick
Tu Lan
8 6th St. (at Market)
San Francisco, CA 94103

This SoMa dive is the epicurean center of the City, literally and figuratively. It offers hearty authentic Vietnamese entrees under $8, fresh ingredients, quick service, and a bustling lunch atmosphere. By far, I've found the imperial rolls, curry fried rice, and combo crispy noodles to be the standouts. 4 stars - 1035 reviews. www.yelp.com/biz/tu-lan-san-francisco

Previous picks: Radius; Limon Rotisserie; Art's Cafe; Little Star Pizza; Yamo; Breakfast at Tiffany's; Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen; Humphry Slocombe.

Change for Change
Congrats to Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California! Over $400,000 has been donated to assist in the Northern Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. www.causes.com/campaigns/97128?cause_id=590211

New Charity: The Bike Kitchen. Winning community awards since 2004, this nonprofit is entirely run by volunteers who teach people how to fix their own bicycles. Riders can rent tools and get on-site help for a daily $5 rate, or $40-80 annual fee (or six volunteer hours). The organization even has made sizable financial assistance this year to both CELLspace and Lyon-Martin Health Services. Address is 650H Florida, San Francisco CA 94110. www.bikekitchen.org
