News of the Week
The San Francisco Giants, not to be outdone by the Warriors' plan, have a new proposal for a mixed-use development across from AT&T Park. It will include 1500 housing units (one-third of which will be affordable housing), eight acres of parkland, a new brewing facility for Anchor Brewing, mom-and-pop retailers, and a parking garage. Voters will have a say during the November municipal election.

"Our first objective was that this project be an asset to the neighborhood.... We have the opportunity to look at the neighborhood holistically, and that doesn't necessarily mean getting the most rent for the retail spaces."
-- Jack Bair, San Francisco Giants general counsel and senior vice president

"It appears the Giants have touched all the bases with this revised project. And those bases are: reasonable heights, increased affordable housing, open space, and neighborhood-serving retail to bring some spark to what is an unfinished neighborhood."
-- Art Agnos, former San Francisco mayor

"We really want to see them succeed in getting something by the voters who can be cranky and unpredictable."
-- Tim Colen, SF Housing Action Coalition executive director

Music
Johnny Walker sat at a table in a bar
Minding his own affairs
Drinking his namesake over the rocks
He was drunk, too drunk to care
When a girl from the bar walked up beside him
And this is what she said
A woman came by with a letter for you
And this is what the letter said

The country western group, based in Austin, has had some turnover over the past four decades, but Ray Benson has been there through it all. Nine Grammy awards and 20+ albums later, the band has partnered with Dolly Parton, the Dixie Chicks, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson, among others. The band stops at Slim's on Bay to Breakers day, May 17, with Sam Outlaw opening.

News of the Week
The Warriors' plan to move to San Francisco for the 2018-19 season continues to gain steam, as City officials are working out issues with Mission Bay residents and employers as well as the Giants.

"It seems to me that the Warriors and the City are scrambling to respond to the Mission Bay Alliance's concerns, that they didn't have the impacts of the arena in mind when they decided to site it at Mission Bay."
-- San Singer, Mission Bay Alliance spokesman

"It is concerning to see that they're using emergency vehicles and pregnant mothers as reason to oppose our project."
-- Adam Van de Water, SF Office of Economic and Workforce Development project manager

"I am confident that with your leadership, the City will resolve any projected adverse impacts that would be generated by the operation of the (arena), and will identify, implement, and monitor appropriate actions and remedies to mitigate any such impacts."
 -- Sam Hawgood, UCSF Chancellor

An excellent option for sit-down Mexican food, this cantina offers chicken avocado quesadillas, chicken mole, pork chile verde, and tortilla soup. It was a participant in Tuesday's Dining Out For Life, and handled the massive crush of people admirably. No corkage or Healthy SF charge either, a rarity in today's fee-obsessed service industry.

Its one-year anniversary - with half-price mini golf and arcade - is coming up in a few days. Fourteen impeccably designed holes, each with a clever twist or local bent, are staged within a fairly tight space. Upscale bar food, $11 cocktails, and dozens of bourbon options should tell you something about the typical clientele. After 8pm, the course closes to individuals under 21 years old.

Nooks & Crannies
The Armory
San Francisco, CA

The massive castle-like historic building near Mission and 14th St. opened in 1914 as a replacement to the National Guard's destroyed armory in the Western Addition. The Armory served as the City's primary sports venue for several decades. Once the National Guard moved to Fort Funston in 1976, the building was then used to film Star Wars scenes and to hold rehearsals for the San Francisco Opera. It fell into disrepair and community debates until an online pornography company purchased the building. Today, the public can take $25 90-minute tours.

Music
You belong to the gang
And you say you can't break away
But I'm here with my hands on my heart
And our families can't agree
I'm your brother's sworn enemy
But I'll shout out my love to the stars
-- "O Valencia!," by The Decemberists (435,000 views; Nov '10 upload)

Oh, the stories involving this quintet from Portland, Ore. A televised feud with Stephen Colbert. Music teachers on The Simpsons. Performance on the last show of Parks and Recreation. Breast cancer. Stolen equipment and subsequent online fundraiser. One of my goals is to see a live show by them - which reportedly involve elaborate historical reenactments and significant audience participation. In support of their seventh album, they make a stop at the Berkeley Greek Theatre on May 1, with Lucius opening.

News of the Week
For the first quarter of 2015, Chinese buyers ranked San Francisco as the most desirable international location to buy housing, according to a website tracking millions of online searches.

"For many well-heeled Chinese buyers, the entire U.S. housing market -- even the somewhat pricey S.F. Bay Area -- remains a bargain versus Hong Kong, New York, London, and Beijing."
-- Mark McLaughlin, Pacific Union CEO

"A woman from China paid all cash for the house, and is not going to live in it but is going to rent it out for a while. In the end, she was the strongest buyer because she didn't want to negotiate over nickel-and-dime things."
-- Linda Vida, Oakland homeowner who moved to Colorado

"(They bought) a million-dollar-plus home in Palo Alto for a 2-year-old who they anticipate getting into Stanford.
-- Ken DeLeon, DeLeon Realty founder

Founded in 2000, this brewery has a bona fide hit with its seasonal Hell or High Watermelon Wheat - currently on tap along with several others! It's fairly spacious inside, with multiple TVs likely tuned into the Giants if they're on. (The location is just a few blocks from the ballpark.) Some food options such as tater tots and IPA chili are decent, but the real draw would be the beer.
