Randy's Guide 3-7-3

Let's Go Niners!

Music
Well, you see me only on the need
In the evening, when you're feeling mean
As a boulder slowly gaining speed down a hill
In your path, nothing I could do.

Current Event
The 2013 pedestrian report is out, and it reveals that 21 pedestrians were killed and about 900 were injured by drivers in San Francisco.

"You don't do anything wrong, and you get hit. Yet this person doesn't even receive a ticket, and your name is on the bill they just created."
-- Jikaiah Stevens, Union Square hairstylist critically injured while walking

"People are not paying to their surroundings. They're not paying attention when they're driving a car. They're not paying attention when they're riding a bicycle, and they're not paying attention when they're walking."
-- Mikail Ali, SFPD Commander for MTA

"When we have more than 20 people dying on our streets ... that's a public health crisis."

History
William Larimer, Jr.
(1809-1875)

The Pennsylvania native first struck it rich with Pittsburgh's railroad industry. Then, he moved out west and became a homesteader in the Kansas Territory. Finally, in 1858, he arrived near the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. He named it "Denver City" in honor of Kansas Territory Governor James Denver. The Colorado Territory formed in 1861, with Denver as its capital. He was passed over as the governor, and instead became a U.S. commissioner, district judge of probate, Civil War colonel, and Kansas state senator. Larimer Square and Larimer St., which runs between LoDo and Five Points, are named after him.

Current Event
Technology workers - and, in particular, the search engine giant Google - have faced increasing scrutiny from the media and activists about their connection to the skyrocketing rents and  gentrification in many neighborhoods of San Francisco. Google recently announced the use of a chartered ferry, which can hold 150 passengers, and Mayor Lee reported that their shuttle buses (which currently carry about 35000 workers daily) will be part of a new program that charges use of the public MUNI bus stops.

"This is an important first step in bringing some more order and rules to our roads, as well as asking our companies to pay a fair share of what it costs the City to maintain our streets."
-- David Chiu, President of SF Board of Supervisors

"What we're really trying to do is steer them to the stops where they're less likely to have any adverse impact."
-- Ed Reiskin, Director of SF Municipal Transportation Agency

"We certainly don't want to cause any inconvenience to SF residents, and we're trying alternate ways to get Googlers to work."
 -- Google statement

An old-school reminder of earlier days in San Francisco. The original family recipes found its home here in 1935, and while ownership has changed, the look and taste probably hasn't all that much. History
Saints Peter and Paul Church
(1924-present)

As home to San Francisco's Archdiocese, this remarkable parish can trace its roots back to 1884 in the North Beach area. The 1906 fire destroyed the entire neighborhood, and the church was rebuilt at its current location, 666 Filbert St. Sister Act 2, Dirty Harry featured scenes filmed here, and Joe DiMaggio famously married his first wife here. With the extension of Chinatown into previously North Beach storefronts, there are now weekly masses in Mandarin.

Charity
Charity: Hamilton Family Center. The Hamilton Family Center started as the first family homeless shelter in San Francisco in 1985. Since then, they've added transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, children & teen services, and First Avenues (which helps to prevent evictions and provide move-in financial assistance).

Free Activities
1. 49ers Watch Parties: Sunday, 10am
 - The Independent
 - SoMa StrEat Food Park
The Niners, in their last season at Candlestick, advance to play the Carolina Panthers in the NFC divisional semifinals. The winner would face the victor of the Chargers-Broncos game for a spot in the Super Bowl. For betting purposes, the Niners are favored by one point. The Independent is impressive with its 14-foot screen and solid sound system. The Food Park is cool with its multiple food trucks and very cheap beer available for sale.

2. Fire Dancers: Thursday, 7-10pm
Cupid's Span along the Embarcadero will host fire dancers and spinners against the Bay Bridge light show as a backdrop. Weather should be dry, though there's always a risk the nearby fire station will attempt to shut this one down.

3. No Pants BART: Sunday, 1-4pm
I really, really hope that the riders magically fall upon the new BART cars with the gross carpet and cloth seats replaced as part of the ongoing refurbishment. Look for them on the streets of the Embarcadero-to-Civic-Center region starting at 2pm.

Though the deep-dish pizza pales in comparison to Bay Area favorites such as Little Star and Zachary's, it's a sizable, affordable younger sibling. Like Target. What I would absolutely recommend is the bread pudding, which co-mingles semi-sweet chocolate, apple, and cinnamon in dessert goodness. Expect a wait among uber-hipsters unless you eat at very bizarre hours. 4 stars - 1756 reviews

Since Masa will text you after your table is ready 30+ minutes later, might as well grab a drink! This unassuming bar sits directly across the street, with a decent tap and wine list. No hard liquors, no sodas beyond Mexican Coke. I suppose the vinyl was pretty good too. 4 stars - 239 reviews

History

Echo Park

It's home to both of this week's recommended spots. Echo Park remains one of the denser neighborhoods in Los Angeles, with notable residents such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jackson Pollack, and Jackson Browne. It remains heavily Hispanic (64%) and Asian (19%). But lo! The white hipsters are flooding in to the inexpensive properties and setting up trend-forward restaurants and bars. I found it to be oppressive at first glance, but I suppose I could be wrong.
